WHAT IS ACADEMIC ADVISING
AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Academic advising helps students explore academic interests, review degree requirements and curriculum, and discuss
career paths and plans. Your academic advisor is there to help you navigate your academic career while keeping you on
track to graduate on time.
TO SET YOU UP ON THIS PATH FOR SUCCESS,
FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
■ Learn the basics through the Ready, Rev, Go! module.
■ Complete the academic interest survey, if required by
your school.
Additionally, students will attend a First-Year Experience
course in their first semester. These First-Year Experience
courses, in conjunction with ongoing conversations with
your adviser, are the opportune time for you to address
your plans and specific questions as your college journey
begins.
■ Attend your school’s academic session on day two of
New Student Orientation for first-year students, and be
sure to check your GW email in July for next steps to
register for classes.
■ Utilize the Plan Ahead feature in GWeb to prepare for
class registration.
By establishing a solid foundation of courses in your first
semester, you will be primed for success. The academic
advising focus before arriving to campus is to prepare you
for your first class registration.
While we know you may have specific questions about
your academic plans, advisers are unable to discuss these
broader goals until after you attend your school’s academic
advising session. If you attend New Student Orientation
Sessions 1-4, your advising session will take place on Day 2.
If you plan to attend Session 5 (Aug. 21-22), you must also
register for a virtual academic advising session with your
school, to be held in June or July. No academic advising
sessions will take place during Session 5.
■ How Class Registration Works
■ As you prepare for registration, we encourage you
to update your contact information, including your
cell phone number and current address. You can
do this by logging into GWeb and navigating to
“Register for Classes”.
■ Prior to the date and time of your registration, you
are encouraged to log into GWeb to ensure you can
login successfully.
■ On your registration date and start time log into
GWeb. Even though you have a two-hour window,
log in at the start of the time frame.
■ Once you are logged in, click on the Registration
Menu. More details, including screenshots and
instructions about the registration process is
available on the Registrar’s website.
