Purpose
The Nashman Center integrates civic engagement into GW’s educational work. We
promote equity and active citizenship in a diverse democracy, focus GW’s resources
to address community needs through reciprocal partnerships beyond the campus,
and enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship at GW. The Nashman Center offers
opportunities for students to explore their interests in community and civic engagement,
as part of coursework and outside the classroom.
Services
Annual Service Events: From the Welcome Day of Service to the MLK Day of Service,
students can engage in service on a one-time basis.
Get Engaged in D.C: The Nashman Center helps you earn your Federal Work Study (FWS)
award or volunteer in the community through four programs: Jumpstart, engageDC,
SMART DC and Math Matters.
Register to Vote: Through GW Votes, every first-year student can learn how to register
to vote and submit their absentee or mail-in ballot. Sign up on Turbovote to check your
registration, see what’s on your ballot and make a plan to vote. And don’t forget to change
your voter registration to your new city!
Community Engaged Courses: When registering for classes, look for CES, which
incorporate service opportunities.
To use your FWS award to serve in the community, apply through
the Student Employment Talent Management portal. Be sure to bring identification
documents like your license, social security card and passport with you to campus!
