TIPS
› The Thanksgiving holiday provides a nice break to help
your student refocus their energies for the remainder of
the semester. Still, your student should not put studying
and coursework completely aside as finals are quickly
approaching.
› Check in with your student to make sure they understand
everything they need to know from Campus Living &
Residential Education (CLRE) about the upcoming holiday
breaks.
› While your student is home during the Thanksgiving
Break, be sure to celebrate the semester’s victories and
work together to understand challenges.
› If your student is staying on campus for the Thanksgiving
Break, be sure to check emails from the Division for
Student Affairs for special programming. You can also
email living@gwu.edu for some suggestions for your
student.
› If your student expresses concern about tackling
coursework and upcoming finals, remind them about
GW Academic Commons, which conducts in-person and
virtual/on-demand workshops on preparing for exams
and academic coaching to help with study strategies. For
more information visit academiccommons.gwu.edu.
› Reiterate the importance of adequate sleep, healthy
eating, exercise, and relaxation. Encourage your student
to find time for a favorite sport or hobby they can pursue
to keep up morale and maintain balance. GW’s well-being
website students.gwu.edu/wellbeing and Instagram
account instagram.com/wellbeingatgw is a helpful place
to start!
› Intramural sports allow your student and their friends to
form teams and play competitive sports on a casual level.
Your student can learn more at Lerner Health & Wellness
Center by emailing imsports@gwu.edu.
› Remind your student that the Division for Student Affairs
provides great resources for getting connected and
engaging with the GW community.
› Talk to your first-year students in ESIA, CCAS or GWSB
about the GW Global Bachelor’s Program - a signature
GW experience - to see if this #OnlyatGW program is
right for them. This program provides students with
the opportunity to set themselves apart in the global
job market by expanding upon the traditional study
abroad semester and instead spending three separate
experiences abroad while researching a global challenge
from the lens of these different locations and perspectives.
Applications open in November and close in March.
