Good Samaritan/Medical Amnesty Provision
GW is thankful to the students who take an active role in caring for fellow
students by acting in responsible and timely ways during serious situations
such as alcohol or other drug use. Seeking help that is critically needed for
a fellow student shows courage and leadership.
Through the university’s Alcohol & Other Drug Medical Amnesty
program, a student needing to be evaluated for transport, regardless of
the outcome of that evaluation, to medical professionals as the result of
alcohol intoxication and/or other drug use will not face formal student
conduct action by Conflict Education & Student Accountability, provided
that the student has not committed any other violations of the Code of
Student Conduct that warrant conduct action. A “Good Samaritan” who
makes a call to obtain medical assistance for a student following harmful
use of alcohol and other drugs also will not face formal non-academic
student conduct action, provided that they have committed no violation of
the Code of Student Conduct other than the possession or use of alcohol
by persons under 21 years of age or intoxication on or off university
premises or possession or use of other drugs.
Tips for Managing Academic Integrity
Even if students have successfully navigated academic integrity before, we
encourage them to engage thoughtfully with the topic at GW. Different
course expectations, new areas of study, and conevolving technology
can all impact expectations. We encourage all our students to use the
following strategies to improve their success with academic integrity:
2025-2026
•Get support: Everyone at GW is invested in helping students navigate
academic integrity. Resources like CESA, research librarians, the Writing
Center, and faculty can all support student success in this area.

• Plan ahead: Many students accused of violations rushed to finish an
assignment at the last minute and took shortcuts. Planning ahead helps
avoid this and gives students time to work with faculty, the Writing Center,
and Conflict Education and Student Accountability to avoid those mistakes.
• Clarify expectations: Different faculty, courses, and assignments may
have different expectations about how to best uphold academic integrity.
When in doubt, cite your sources and ask your faculty. If you’re unsure
about if you can use artificial intelligence, as your faculty.
• Plan your work to focus on citations: Often in developing a paper,
students aren’t taking careful notes about their sources. Those careful
notes can be invaluable in preventing an academic integrity violation.
